Handbook - Economic and social rights of women in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The economic and social rights of women are fundamental to achieving their equality, improving their quality of life, and enabling them to actively contribute to the development of their communities and society as a whole. By understanding these rights, women gain the ability to protect themselves, their families, and their broader communities, thus reducing inequality and fostering social justice.

This handbook was created to provide women with practical information, tools, and guidelines to help them understand and exercise their rights. Through a detailed analysis of international standards and national laws, the handbook addresses key issues related to labor rights, social security, protection from discrimination, access to education and empowerment, and legal protection against violence.

The handbook includes practical examples from case law, such as decisions of the Constitutional Court of BiH and procedures of the Institution of the Human Rights Ombudsman of BiH. Special attention is given to the challenges faced by women in rural areas, with case studies from the Una-Sana Canton, Tuzla Canton, and the Birač region. These examples offer insights into the realization of rights in different local contexts and highlight the practical barriers women often encounter.

As part of the project “From Empowerment to Change – Ambassadors of Women’s Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” the handbook aims to empower women to become active advocates for their rights within their local communities. Through additional education and training, women gain not only knowledge and skills but also the motivation to lead change, contributing to the advancement of women’s status and the creation of a fairer society.

The project "Women's Rights Ambassadors for Empowerment and Change in Bosnia and Herzegovina" is funded by the European Union, and is implemented by DVV International - Country Office Bosnia and Herzegovina, Center for Education and Research NAHLA and Association SARA–Srebrenica. The content of the publication is the sole responsibility of the project partners and does not necessarily reflect the views of the European Union.

The handbook is available for download and is intended for all those committed to strengthening women’s rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
