Adult Education – A Key to Personal Growth and Social Progress
Prof. Dr. Perica Ivanek, Head of the Subdivision for Preschool and Primary Education at the Department of Education of the Government of the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina, shares his long-standing experience in implementing andragogical training programs. His reflection highlights the transformative power of adult education and its essential role in both individual development and broader societal advancement:
“Given the challenging times we live in, adult education plays a crucial role in contemporary society, driven by rapid changes in science, technology, the labor market, and social structures. Investing in lifelong learning enables individuals to remain competitive, improve their quality of life, and actively participate in society and public affairs.
The importance of adult education today is multifaceted, and here are some of the key aspects:
Adapting to the modern labor market:
• Technological advancement requires constant updating of knowledge and skills.
• It enables adults to retrain or acquire new competencies.
• It helps reduce unemployment and offers opportunities for career development.
Enhancing personal and professional competitiveness:
• Lifelong learning has become a necessity in a dynamic society.
• Individuals with additional education have better prospects for advancement and greater financial security.
Developing personal skills and self-confidence:
• Education supports personal transformation, improves communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
• It boosts self-confidence and motivation to achieve new goals.
Social integration and active citizenship:
• It promotes better social inclusion of vulnerable groups (unemployed, migrants, elderly).
• Education about rights and responsibilities encourages active participation in society.
Improving quality of life and health:
• Education on health, finances, and life skills contributes to better self-care and family well-being.
• Awareness of healthy lifestyles reduces the risk of chronic diseases.
Ultimately, adult education is not just a tool for professional development, but a means of achieving social justice, economic stability, and personal fulfillment. In an era of rapid change, lifelong learning becomes essential for every individual – it is not a luxury, but a necessity.
Throughout years of implementing andragogical training, I have witnessed numerous positive reactions and clearly visible transformations among participants, even those who were initially quite skeptical. Many believed that their existing skills and knowledge, along with prior experience in adult education and direct teaching, were sufficient and saw no need for further improvement.
However, these very participants, according to their own statements, experienced a ‘transformation’ – acquiring new skills for working in adult education and the teaching process in general, as well as in everyday life and their personal professional development. This fact alone is a strong argument in favor of the importance of andragogical training and the quality of its implementation in previous years.”
