Late last week, DVV International – Country Office for Bosnia and Herzegovina, in collaboration with the Sarajevo Canton Chamber of Commerce, organized a two-day seminar titled "Adult Education Between Politics and Economy – A Critical Review." The event brought together adult education providers, experts, and government representatives. The seminar was led by Prof. Dr. Katarina Popović, a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, and Secretary General of the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE).
Throughout the seminar, participants discussed key issues shaping adult education in modern society, focusing on who actually influences policy-making and how global trends impact local education systems. The main challenges facing the adult education sector were analyzed, with particular attention to the effects of neoliberal policies. Prof. Popović also initiated a discussion on international cooperation in this area, highlighting how global programs can be both a valuable resource and a challenge for local initiatives. Special attention was given to fundamental topics in adult education, including the debunking of common myths associated with the field.
The seminar concluded with an engaging discussion about the current state of adult education in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the necessary steps for future progress. Participants agreed that international trends must be critically assessed and that strategies should be developed to meet local needs and circumstances.
DVV International – Country Office for BiH remains committed to strengthening adult education as a key factor for social and economic development.
